My first introduction to fly fishing was on the Mataura in 1981. I was working long hours at Tiwai Point and needed a diversion. That break came when my neighbour said he was the President of the Southland Flyfishing Club. and they were running a casting tutorial. For practice on most Sundays found us on the banks of the Mataura, Oreti, or the Makarewa. A short trip in the UK found us regularly crossing the Pennines to fish the Derwent. Back in NZ with a growing collection of rods and tackle I joined the Auckland Freshwater Anglers Club were since I have gained fascination for small stream fishing. And can be found regularly fishing the Waikato Spring Creeks with an ever increasing selection of rod and tackle and now my own flies.
