We have been meeting on a regular basis for 40 years now. We are the largest fly-fishing club in New Zealand with 130 plus active members. Over recent months we have been growing and gaining great support from business partners, other clubs and environmental groups.
The fishing itself proved effective – there was no shortage of trout around even if they weren’t visible in the light. I cracked onto the first fish of the day around mid-morning. Certainly not a trophy, but a tidy Rainbow that took a green Woolly Bugger and put up a good fight. Back it went.
This kicked off a successful period. Eggs got onto a good brown who took a similar fly. Time for lunch and a break back at the lodge, then back to the water for the afternoon where success with the same flies continued. I managed to lose one, and get a 5.5lb brown onto the bank.
Those of us lacking moral fibre (and decent gear) sought refuge in the lodge in the mid afternoon when the heavy rain returned. But Tim and Andreas persevered and ventured further afield. They returned at the change of the light with photos of some beautiful fish to show for their efforts.

It’s not just about the sport of fishing. It is also dedicated to the promotion of conservation and study of game fish. We assist other members and scientific foundations in the collection of scientific data and information for further analysis and an increased education about our local ecosystem.
